Trende Study: Understanding and Managing Endocine and Metabolic Disease After Solid Organ Transplantation

For a better understanding of the endocrinological complications after transplantation

The prospective Trende Study investigates the development of endocrine and metabolic disorders in patients after solid organ transplantation – with a special focus on post-transplant diabetes mellitus (PTDM), osteoporosis, sarcopenia, and other hormonal complications. Our goal is to identify early risk factors, define predictive biomarkers, and develop personalized therapeutic strategies.

We perform detailed metabolic phenotyping before and after transplantation, including clinical data, body composition (DXA, BIA), skeletal muscle and bone assessments, insulin sensitivity, and quality of life metrics.

In a randomized intervention trial, we further evaluate whether early and structured diabetes treatment – such as continuous glucose management, GLP-1 receptor agonists or intensified insulin therapy – can prevent or delay the onset of PTDM.

Ultimately, this study aims to improve our understanding of endocrine complications after transplantation and to optimize long-term care for transplant recipients.
